It'll technically be an xbox live match, but it will be the same as a LAN game.

Jun 08, 2015 · There is a sticked post on Page 1 here called "FAQ Server Hosting". There are two ways to LAN. Either create a "Host/Local" server from your game itself or create an un-official private server from the FAQ section using the stand alone Ark server provided to everyone. The game comes with dedicated lan server out of box. I just do exactly as you plan - I play with my son on LAN, running my own server. No griefers, no PVP, just pure fun. Also, as a server admin, I'm free to config the server, adding mods what improve gameplay.
